The Alfa 159 Sportwagon is the Italian car that is both beautiful and sturdy, passionate and dynamic. Engines Overview

The Alfa 159 Sportwagon comes with a choice of five engines, three petrol and two diesel units.

All three petrol engines, a 1.8 MPI with 140bhp, a 2.2 16v with 185bhp and a 3.2 V6 24v with 260bhp, employ state of the art direct injection technology and variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust camshafts. This technology enables both performance and emissions to be optimised without the need for compromise.

The two diesel units, a 1.9 16v with 150bhp and a 2.4 20v which now produces 210bhp, both use second generation common-rail injection systems, known as JTDM. This allows multiple injections of fuel over the cycle to reduce noise and emissions and improve driveability and fuel consumption. Combined with variable geometry turbochargers for further drivability benefits and with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) as standard for ensuring the cleanest possible exhaust, the Alfa 159 diesel engines are truly cutting edge.

Exterior

The new Alfa 159 Sportwagon is a prestigious estate car that combines refined Italian styling with the sporty elegance typical of Alfa Romeo. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in collaboration with the Alfa Romeo Styling Centre, the new car has an elegant, sinuous line, which combines generous dimensions with the compactness typical of Alfa Romeo.

It is characterised by sleek, uncluttered lines from the front light clusters through to the tailgate. A pencil-thin crease running along the side of the vehicle exalts its dimensions and emphasises its sleek shape. Its well-proportioned dimensions (4,660 mm long, 1,828 wide and 1,422 mm high) and compact cabin integrate seamlessly with the body. The classical sporty look associated with Alfa Romeo is combined with space for all passengers and a generous load volume.

Interior & Equipment

The Alfa 159 Sportwagon represents the pleasure of driving in comfort and safety. The use of the most advanced technology means that the model has extremely low noise levels and climatic well-being and dynamic comfort among the best in the category.

In terms of upholstery, the choice is between the exclusive Alfatex fabric and classic or full-grain leather. All the materials are available in a wide range of colours and various materials are used for the interior details, steering wheel and gearstick, including leather and aluminium.

The components chosen to furnish the interior combine to create an extremely pleasant atmosphere. Thanks to advanced technology, the materials are both pleasant to look at and a joy to touch. The dashboard is turned towards the driver whilst the wraparound, ergonomic seats are perfect for long, tiring journeys. With a sporty look, they have been created using carefully selected materials and great attention to detail.

A range of exclusive optional equipment increases the travelling comfort. The centre of the front console can house a satellite navigator, with a bright colour display, which can be used with voice commands and linked to bConnect info-mobility services. You can listen to your favourite music on the Bose Hi-Fi Sound System, with a central speaker on the dashboard for better sound reproduction. The latest-generation automatic climate control system, either dual-zone or tri-zone, enables the driver and passenger to set the temperature and ventilation independently.

The Alfa 159 Sportwagon is remarkably quiet on the inside, thanks to the increased thickness of the windows, giving the utmost comfort in a pleasant, quiet environment. The car can also be fitted with an electric sunroof and with parking sensors front and rear, with a graphic display on the screen.

The luggage compartment on the Alfa 159 Sportwagon has been designed with the utmost attention to detail, down to the smallest particular. It is a practical compartment, designed to hold and protect all types of objects, offering a loading capacity of 445 litres, rising to 1235 litres with the rear seat folded down. It has been specially designed to reflect the personality of the model, and a dynamic, sporty lifestyle.

Safety

Safety was one of the priorities in the design and development of the new Alfa 159 Sportwagon. Passenger protection starts with the ultra-rigid bodyshell and the well-protected cabin area, which acts as a ‘survival cell’ in the event of a head-on or side-on collision. Inside, seven airbags are standard: twin-stage front airbags for the driver and front seat passenger, side airbags, window airbags, and a special driver's knee airbag. A knee airbag for the front seat passenger is an optional extra. In addition there are anti-whiplash head restraints, 3-point inertia-reel seatbelts on all seats, and three Isofix mountings for child seats.

Driving enjoyment is inextricably linked with control, and here the Alfa 159 Sportwagon excels. Take the handling, for instance – the product of a finely-tuned suspension system that comprises high wishbones at the front and an advanced multi-link set-up at the rear. This combination ensures that the wheels always stay in contact with the road, and that the maximum amount of tyre tread is kept in contact with the tarmac. The reassuring feeling of control is enhanced still further by the incredibly quick and precise steering that requires just 2.3 turns from lock to lock.

Should the car swerve or start to take a bend too fast, VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) stability control cuts in automatically to reduce the power from the engine or apply the appropriate brakes and thus prevent understeer or oversteer – invariably without the driver even realising. Drivers can be completely confident in the Alfa 159 Sportwagon's stopping ability, thanks to the powerful Brembo disc brakes all round and the latest Bosch ABS with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution).

The torsional rigidity of a car's bodyshell is crucial to its dynamic behaviour, affecting not only its sturdiness, but its roadholding, handling, noise levels, and overall safety, as well. To achieve class-leading standards for the Alfa 159 Sportwagon in this area, Alfa Romeo's engineers introduced the new 'Premium' floorpan that utilises the latest dual-phase steels, multiple sheet metal and precision laser welding. In addition, the architecture of the bodyshell benefits from three high-strength load lines that run the whole length of the floor to prevent it from buckling in a high impact collision, and extra strong box sections. Some 55% more rigid than its predecessor, the Alfa 159 Sportwagon excels at cornering with minimal body roll, and can change lanes fast without fuss or drama.

On-board Technology

In the Alfa 159 Sportwagon, equipment to enhance well-being on board abounds. Standard features include Cruise Control, automatic climate system with dual-zone temperature control, radio with CD player with controls on the steering wheel and a pushbutton ignition control on the centre console. On the Lusso versions, these are joined by sensors for rain, dusk, and reverse parking.

The Alfa 159 Sportwagon revolutionises the world of in-car communication and entertainment thanks to BLUE&ME™, an advanced hands-free system with voice recognition. Produced in collaboration with Microsoft®, you can telephone or listen to music simply and safely, because you will no longer need to take your hands off the wheel. Using Bluetooth™ technology, you can communicate with the outside using your mobile phone, even if it is in your bag. The system, which is integrated into the car, is activated using steering wheel controls, while on the dashboard display you can ‘browse’ through your address book. The car speakers then amplify the voice of the person you are talking to. All you have to do is register your mobile phone the first time you use the system, and it will be automatically ‘recognised’ by the system each time you get into the car, and will automatically update the phonebook. In addition, thanks to an advanced voice-recognition process, the system does not require a voice learning phase.

But that’s not all, you can also listen to all your favourite music, whether it is stored on an MP3-player or on any other device fitted with a USB connection, thanks to a USB port located in the glove compartment that allows you to connect the device, select the tracks you want using the steering wheel controls and play them through the car’s stereo system. With the Alfa 159 Sportwagon you are always at the centre of the world.
